Shipworms are a type of saltwater clam and believe it or not they like the flavor of your salty dock and seawall pilings. Ever hopped into the water off your dock or swam near a pier? These worms burrow into your wood and concrete and create those little holes you may have noticed while taking your dip. Over time if enough holes are made your pilings can snap like a twig. Other marine growth like barnacles, algae and other aquatic growths attach themselves to your pilings. Floating docks and lifts have one primary use, to keep your boat out of the water. Excessive build up on these floating structures can damage your boat or jet ski when using them. The wheels on floating docks build up barnacles which damage jet skis and boats when taking them in and out of the water.
