The city was incorporated on June 13, 1956, and it grew by canal: Venetian Isles, Lighthouse Manor and Wooler Heights were added between 1957 and 1969, and Coral Key and Pompano Waterway Estates came in with the 1970 annexations. Nearly every one of those subdivisions is canal-front with private dockage, so our Lighthouse Point work is mostly at docks behind houses in ZIP 33064.

On the Intracoastal side, Lighthouse Point Marina (PORT 32) on Marina Circle takes boats up to 80 feet, has fuel and a restaurant and is a DEP-certified Clean Marina, minutes from Hillsboro Inlet. Lighthouse Point Yacht Club on NE 42nd Street is a private club with its own marina. Lake Placid sits beside the Intracoastal, and Cap's Place, the 1928 restaurant on the peninsula between the lake and the waterway that you can only reach by shuttle boat, has been on the National Register since 1990.

From Hillsboro Inlet it is about 40 miles to Bimini and 60 to Grand Bahama, so plenty of Lighthouse Point boats cross regularly. A crossing scrubs the painted hull; it does nothing for the props, shafts and rudders, which bottom paint can't protect, and those grow hard barnacles while the boat sits in its canal during the week. The inlet area is a manatee slow-speed zone, and along the Broward Intracoastal boats stay slow within 50 feet of shore, so the water around the docks is calm and the growth stays where it settles. We clean every 30 days, and hulls without bottom paint every two weeks.

Canals dug in the 1950s and 1960s mean seawalls and pilings of the same age, and Broward County's standard now calls for tidal flood barriers of at least 5.0 feet NAVD88, with north-Broward cities including Lighthouse Point required to adopt matching rules. We don't raise walls; we clean them, inspect them, document their condition ($250 for a home, $350 for a multi-family or commercial property, lender paperwork included) and fill cracks all the way through with custom cement tubes. Wooden pilings from the same era get cleaned without pickaxes or chisels, then wrapped or sleeved if the oysters have been at them.
