Biscayne Bay is open salt water, and Dinner Key's slips and moorings sit right in it. The Miami River is different: it runs about 5.5 miles from the end of the Miami Canal near the airport down to the bay, and it is a mix of salt pushing up from the bay and fresh water coming down the canals. Dams went onto the feeder canals back in the 1940s to stop salt water from pushing inland, so the river's tributaries (the Tamiami, Comfort and Seybold canals) now start at salinity control structures.

From those structures all the way out to the Intracoastal in the bay, the river and its canals are an idle-speed, no-wake zone under county code, and manatees gather in the river in winter. That makes it a slow, quiet place to keep a boat, and a slow, quiet hull is exactly where slime and barnacles settle first. Our divers see more waterline algae on river boats and more hard growth on the running gear of bay boats, and both get the same non-abrasive cavitation cleaning.

Most of our Miami work is in Coconut Grove, where Dinner Key Marina & Mooring Facility on Pan American Drive has 587 wet slips for boats from 30 to 135 feet and more than 250 moorings, and the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club sits just up South Bayshore Drive. We also dive at Rickenbacker Marina on Virginia Key, which has wet and dry storage and has been running since 1983, and at private docks in Brickell south of the river and along the Edgewater bayfront.

Boats that launch from the city ramps at Seminole (Dinner Key), Watson Island, the Miami Marine Stadium ramp on the Rickenbacker Causeway, Legion Park, Morningside Park and Curtis Park on the river usually go home on a trailer, so they don't need us. A dock on the Miami River sits in brackish water with almost no wake to knock growth off it, and a dock on the bay sits in salt water with plenty of oysters. We clean pilings, floating docks and lifts without pickaxes or chisels, and we inspect seawalls in Coconut Grove, Brickell and Edgewater before a sale, with the documentation a lender asks for. We have not found a City of Miami seawall height rule, so the question here is simply the wall's condition, not a code number.
