Hillsboro Inlet connects the ocean to the Intracoastal at the city's north end; the lighthouse is on the far bank in Hillsboro Beach and the A1A bascule bridge crosses between the two. An outgoing tide against an east or southeast wind can stand the inlet up, and the Hillsboro Inlet District handles the sand bypassing and dredging that keep it open. The inlet area and the Cypress Creek and Pompano canals are manatee slow-speed zones.

Inland, the C-14 splits into the Pompano Canal and the Cypress Creek Canal. The Pompano Canal runs east alongside Atlantic Boulevard and discharges into Lake Santa Barbara, which discharges straight into the Intracoastal, so the lake takes drainage water from well inland. Lake Santa Barbara has a seasonal slow zone on winter weekends. Nutrient-rich runoff is exactly what makes some docks need a cleaning every two weeks instead of every 30 days, and the lake is where we see it most.

Harbor Village, between the Intracoastal and US-1, was platted in the 1950s with dug canals for private docks and is the heart of our Pompano route. Pompano Isles, with canals between Riverside Drive and the Intracoastal, and Santa Barbara Shores, with wide canals near the Intracoastal, are the other two. Sands Harbor Resort & Marina on North Riverside Drive has about 50 slips for boats up to 120 feet and a fuel dock, and boats there get the same monthly dive. Alsdorf Park's public ramp on the NE 14th Street Causeway is where the trailer boats go in. The waterfront east side is ZIP 33062, with 33060 and 33064 behind it.

Since January 2022, Pompano's code (Chapter 151) has required tidal flood barriers between 5 feet and 5 feet 10 inches NAVD88. A wall below 5 feet has to be raised if tidal water flows through or over it, if it is not kept in good repair, or if it undergoes a substantial repair, and even dock or lift work on a low wall needs a cost analysis for raising it; after a citation an owner has 60 days to show progress and 365 to finish. We don't raise walls, but 'kept in good repair' is a condition question, and that is what our $250 inspection ($350 multi-family or commercial) answers, with lender-required documentation and cracks filled through with custom cement tubes.
